My brain in turning into mush because (among other things) I watch way too much reality TV. Is it just me, but doesn’t it seem like every new show has the word Jersey in the title? To clear out the cobwebs and get my grey matter up and running, I’ve created the Gratitude Cocktail documentary movie guide to supplement your Netflix queue. Here are a few of my favorites, all of which kick start my brain, and go nicely with a glass of wine.
Spellbound - Follow eight young contestants as they make their way in the National Spelling Bee.
Good Hair - Chris Rock contemplates the ties between women's self-esteem and their hair.
My kid could paint that - A thought-provoking documentary about a precocious 4-year-old artist.
King Corn - Two friends plant an acre of corn and learn about genetically modified seeds, powerful herbicides and the realities of modern farming.
The Hobart Shakespeareans - A passionate educator inspires his students from Central Los Angeles.
Wordplay - A fascinating look at the decidedly addictive pastime of crossword puzzles.
Paper Clips - A middle School in rural Tennessee performs an extraordinary experiment in Holocaust education.
The kid stays in the picture - The 1994 autobiography of film producer Robert Evans.
I’m grateful for documentaries because they make me think, and this last one, just makes me laugh, and spill wine on my couch.
The Aristocrats - 100 funny people tell the same raunchy vaudeville joke – with a 100 different results.
That’s why I’m grateful for documentaries.
